Historic Travel US - Many Faces of New York (DVD)
Variety is what makes New York such a fascinating place. MANY FACES OF NEW YORK takes viewers back to the mid-20th century in exploration of how New York came to be such an ethnically diverse place. Around the World in New York functions as a guide through Manhattan`s uptown and downtown neighborhoods, offering the viewer a glimpse of the city as it existed in 1940. By including footage from Chinese New Year`s, St. Patrick`s Day, and Puerto Rican baseball games, the film captures the energy and tradition of several different cultures. The next film, entitled For the Living, was created nine years later by the New York City Housing Authority. It represents quite the other side of the spectrum from the earlier film by dwelling on poverty and misery in New York rather than its jubilant celebrations. The film proposes the development of housing projects as an affordable and practical solution to the filth-, disease-, and fatality-filled slums that people of the 1940s had not choice but to live in.
